Joyce Crain and Carl Philabaum collaborated in designing and fabricating Pas de Deux. It is a creation of 2,773 dichroic acrylic tiles that reflect and refract light, producing a rainbow of shimmering colors and reflections dancing on the ceiling.The dichroic tiles are connected by more than 2,000 feet of a high-stength fiber. Each of the 611 strands are individually attached to the mesh ceiling.

“Thrilling! It was an experience of a lifetime to work with artist Joyce Crain and composer Mike Olson to create and perform choreography for the installation of Atmosphere. The collaborative process stimulated me to reach further into the movement metaphors and bring them to life. The ever changing forms, colors, and reflections inherent in Atmosphere stimulated the movement discovery process. Simply being in the space that Atmosphere inhabits sparks my imagination.”
