Joyce Crain and Carl Philabaum created Pas de Deux to honor Jory Hancock and Melissa Lowe for their decades of passion, vision, and dedication in building the University of Arizona School of Dance.

Joyce Crain and Carl Philabaum collaborated in designing and fabricating the suspended sculpture Pas de Deux. This video shows the model that they built. Pas de Deux expresses dance and movement – integrating diagonal lines and geometric shapes with curves and flowing, organic forms. The work of the abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky who combined diagonal lines with curves is the inspiration.

Joyce Crain and Carl Philabaum collaborated in designing and fabricating Pas de Deux. It is a creation of 2,773 dichroic acrylic tiles that reflect and refract light, producing a rainbow of shimmering colors and reflections dancing on the ceiling. The dichroic tiles are connected by more than 2,000 feet of a high-stength fiber. Each of the 611 strands are individually attached to the mesh ceiling.

"Triad is unpredictable in color and movement. It has infinite diversity, yet is in harmony. The first time I saw Triad, it reminded me of my experience snorkeling and watching the enchanting colored fish in the sea. Thousands of different colors ... beauty and serenity accompanied by a very particular force. I'm lovin' it!"
